paint and washing

this may sound like a simple problem. but when it comes to washing I have come across problems with water spots (hard water spots is what I call them)
my mule is a semi gloss and I have little problem with washing and then drying and it looks good. on another vehicle I have painted lusterless and flat. the white water spots are ruff to clean off. I have used soft water and it sure makes a difference, but most of the time I do not have access to soft water.
and I end up with what I call hard water camo!
How do you keep your vehicles clean and avoid this problem.
thanks
