New Trailer Hitch
I added a hitch receiver to my A1 yesterday. Now I can tow a military trailer (my son's 416) or the Harbor Freight trailer I built for my daughter's camping gear. It consists of a 5 x 10 inch 1/4'' plate held on with the four bolts that hold the stock pintle. The receiver is a 6inch 2 x 2 piece of receiver stock welded to the plate. And yes, I know, the A1s didn't come with the trailer safety chain loops.

Nice looking setup but I would like to point something out. The hitch you added is below the plane of the frame member so whenever you are pulling or pushing it is leveraging against the crossmember. Also, whenever you add tongue weight to that hitch it is amplified by the length of the receiver and then that also leverages down and back on the crossmember. Be sure to use very light trailers and also light tongue loads.

It is my intention to be able to tow the afore mentioned Harbor Freight trailer. Max tongue weight I ever expect to encounter is maybe 50lb and a total weight of 300. The pintle hitch, however, is still installed as originally installed.

Shouldn't be a problem then. Whenever I see a 2" receiver I think about people loading them down to the max. I had many welding jobs I turned down because people wanted me to repair stuff like that.
By the way, I like the detail where you ground out the relief in the receiver to accommodate the pintle. Clean.
