M151A1 begining of new project

Post by Hell On Wheels » Sat Oct 04, 2014 6:48 pm

I'm not a MUTT guru for starters, I'm HMMWV guru so if I ask a dumb question don't laugh  My only experience with 151 was when I was stationed in Korea (87)for a year and I only changed out a few clutch's and engines because these vehicles never broke

Just bought a M151A1, Ford ORD built in 1966 and is a no runner. So I have two issues:

1. The head has a stuck valve but the engine turns free. Before I begin to put batteries in it to check what should I check as far as fuel? The seller stated "is a friend not some random person" its been parked in the garage for 15 years and was running on regular fuel. Then began to run unleaded fuel that's when it began to have the valve sticking. Can these engines be run with unleaded fuel?

2. The brake pedal drops to the floor, I think either its has no brake fluid or a bad master cylinder. Is the square plug on the windshield frame the reservoir for the master cylinder? Does this take Dot5?

Today is day one of research so I'm going to be looking up some TM's or Pubs to locate items and parts I will need. It also appears I'm missing the correct fender lights and would like a picture of the correct lights for the 66 Ford if anybody has? Thanks in advance for your input and any help is greatly appreciated.

Robert

I changed the original post name as I will use this as my information board. Just a few questions and an update photo of work in progress. Just removed all items not military and installed the original bumper its all bent up when I get to the final stage to paint I will replace it. I wanted to give a shout out to Muttguru who has provided me with some important information and Leo from Texas who I have just began buying parts from and getting knowledge from both and members on the board many thanks.

Status Update: batteries, battery tray, battery hardware, master and wheel cylinders will be here on Monday. Still need some B/O for the front grill, seat cushions and relocate the turn signals from the grill to the fenders. That's another day as the harness was badly modified and I need to locate the original wire supply.

Q1. I have a rust question, what is best solvent to use to stop the surface rust? Will CLR work?

Q2. I was working on my rocker arm assembly, I couldn't find the torq specs on the rocker arm. I found the head (65-70 lb-ft) and valve cover (10-15 lb-ft) torq specs, can anybody help?

Thanks

Robert

Bad news today when cleaning out my tank. Its full of crap and rusted as hell. Looking over it I think its best to replace it. Are theses hard to find? What is the difference from a A1 vs. A2 tank?

Update on my project.

Just replaced master cylinder and all wheel cylinders. Tested all lines and blew them out and cleaned them. Brakes are good to go. Replaced all battery post. I found a NOS A1 tank and should have it by Friday along with a slew of small parts to include new fuel lines, filter, carburetor, valve cover, seat cushions, battery tray, turn signal covers, B/O stop light, some rattle cans and front bumper etc.... to spot paint as I go along. Altogether I convinced myself to think it only cost me only $500.00, then I felt better  .

I do have a question what is the part number of the rubber seal/gasket that is on the bottom of the windshield between the frame and cow panel? I couldn’t find it in the TM. I see it as a dotted item but not identified to a part number.

Robert
Robert, it is listed officially as "Seal, Non-Metallic" but it is generally referred to as the "rubber windshield-to-body seal" (or gasket).
Part Number is 11660447. NSN is 5330-00-151-4360
Before you install it, go to the G838 board and read up about installing the seal. You'll find several references to this task. It may save you some heartache if you see how other owners installed theirs.

Just a hint, those rattle cans you bought from him in Pa. came from your neighbor in Texas. He buys his paint from Rapco most likely as do most of the vendors.
