Re: M151A1 begining of new project
Ax uses 1 strap near head. It looks like you might be missing that footman loop. You are also missing the 2 ax handle brackets. The shovel takes 2 straps, 1 long, 1 short. There should be a footman loop near the head/crook and one back closer to the handle. The long strap secures the head/crook, pulling it inward toward the body and forcing the head forward into the bracket. The Pioneer Tool Strap Set consists of 3 straps; 2 are identical in length, 1 is longer.
The footman loops that I do see are for the lower door retention strap and have nothing to do with the ax and shovel. Too many people ignore the manual and insist on adding a second strap to the ax utilizing the lower door strap footman loops. All this accomplishes is putting upward tension on the ax handle which needs to be tensioned downward; but what would I know

David,
You have been very helpful can you give me the location in measurement for the 2 missing brackets and footman loops. I have all the straps.
Thanks in advance
Robert

Re: M151A1 begining of new project
From the pics, that A1 looks like something you can work with. I dont know how much rusted-out spots there are underneath, but the side rails look doggone good and trust me, that is a blessing.
Since you will be doing serious repair, you need not only the organization maintenance -20 and -20P but the Direct Support -34 and -34P to have the most complete information and parts info you really need. Try to find the older manuals with only the M 151 and M 151Al. The later ones that include the A2 will just help you get confused on some things that are really different between the two models.
Looking at some of those who are helping out and answering some of your questions, I gotta tell you, you got the best help on the planet!!!!! Wishing you great success in your repair endeavors. While repariing them not that complicated, they do have some hand wringing hair pulling issues in component design and continuity that are sometimes difficult to pin down and fix

If you did not get those measurements go to the g838.org site and ask there. One of our members there has measurements on anything and everything.Hell On Wheels wrote:David,

Re: M151A1 begining of new project
Thanks Rick,
I was able to get measurements from my friend who has all the footman loops and brackets on his MUTT. I also helped him out by wiring up his dash, installing his new carburetor, adjusted the parking brake and wired up the fuel tank. He tried to do the work but it wasn't done correct so I cleaned it up for him. Now I just need to make time to work on my MUTT.
Thanks Ed,
I have been slowly working on my MUTT and really enjoying it as it runs great.

Re: M151A1 begining of new project
Got bored and began to install the front harness, replace hood and replace windshield sandblast all the seats, front grill and air cleaner housing. During the wire harness install I ran into the turn signal switch configuration so I had to reach out to the "Mutt Guru" to help me figure it out.
This is how the wiring should be connected:-
1. Your Solid State Flasher Unit.
Terminal Going To
A Turn Switch H
B Turn Switch F
C Ground/Earth
Your Turn Switch
Terminal Going To
A 460
B 461
C 22-461
D Main Light Switch C
E 22-460
F Solid State Flasher Unit B
G 460 461 via Main Light Switch J
While the hood was removed I replace the fan belts, sanded down the inner fender wall and painted them along with the radiator, generator, voltage regulator. After getting it all cleaned up with the new harness it looks pretty good. Not as good of some you guys do but close enough with my budget.
After I got back the windshield back I was going to get my brother to fix the rust spots but a few guys mentioned it would be cheaper to just replace it. So I found one from redriver.
Here is a picture of the seat frame after just painting it, I did all the seat frames this way. They will look nice with the new seat cushions.
Finished and painted
Still a lot more work to go but I'm going to wait for the fall because its to darn hot late Jul-Aug average temperature 101 degrees. More updates later.

Re: M151A1 begining of new project
Thanks guys, I do have a few questions:
1. What is the proper way to secure the copper lines going under the radiator mount? I just zip tied them but I would think there is supposed to be a clamp of sort.
2. What does the rear valve cover chain mount to?
3. Where does the radiator chain mount to?

Re: M151A1 begining of new project
There is not supposed to be a chain at the rear valve cover bolt, that is only on the front to hold the oil cap. The radiator cap chain if I remember correctly has a hole in the brace that goes to the mount. The lines do not originally have a clamp, they are originally much more tightly configured. The vacuum line to the vent on the oil sensor has a clamp on the first screw holding the side tappet cover. The vacuum line to the distributor I think had a clamp at the second tappet cover or the second screw of the first cover. The PCV vent line is held tight by the fitting in the block and the fitting at the carb. The fuel line is held tight at the pump by the fitting on the pump and at the filter up top. The way the lines were bent originally they stayed pretty stiff.

As I recall, the RADIATOR chain clips to the vent tube. Down the road, I think they quit putting the chains on the caps altogether because in use by the grunts, they were either disconnected, unconnected, or broken.

AND, They tend to let the cap end up in the fan when filling it with the engine running. Ask me how I know that! Try grabbing a cap that is being batted around by the fan someday.

Re: M151A1 begining of new project
Hahahah..that reminds me of the time I almost broke my wrist trying to adjust the valves with a box end wrench with the engine running and oil going everywhere rather than doing it static That and the radiator cap slappin around in the fan takes the warning "those things will kill ya" to a new level. LOL

Are the lines copper or SS? Mine are copper, let take a look.Rickf wrote:There is not supposed to be a chain at the rear valve cover bolt, that is only on the front to hold the oil cap.
