License Plates

Postby 47EOD » Thu Sep 08, 2011 8:56 pm

I was wondering if anyone had a good way to mount license plates on a MUTT.

I had the idea that on the front the plate could be mounted like a general's insignia was put on the front bumper on the passenger side. But the rear of the MUTT is problematic.

Maybe a piece of plywood inside the spare tire like we had on our MP vehicles?

I have been told by many in Texas that you can use the hood and bumper numbers and do not need regular tags.I am from the Peoples Republic of New Jersey so I have no such luck.

Here is how my rear plate is mounted. It is also illuminated per Mo. law.

Yeah I understood the same thing about license plates in Texas. If the vehicle is only used for parades and displays, etc. then a license plate is issued but does not have to be mounted on the vehicle. In its place one of the markings on the vehicle identifies it.

But since mine is a daily driver those rules don't apply, so I am looking for a way to mount the plates that will sort of blend in with the overall appearance.

Raymond, that is pretty much what we used to do to our MP vehicles and it looks well suited for a license plate holder, thanks!

I also researched this forum and found this thread, viewtopic.php?f=10&t=18264. It also has some very good ideas. I definitely will include a brake light and license plate illumination. But I do like the plywood insert in the spare. Maybe I can decorate it with EOD markings!

Thanks for the help! I'll post pics as soon as it is done. They won't be for a few weeks since the vehicle is in the shop.

Get yourself a rear license plate bracket/mount and (I don't know what the laws in your state are), whiile you're at it, wire it for the rear light if you need one:

On the front, I'm afraid you'll either have to drill into the bumper to mount the front bracket or find a way to clamp it on. In NJ, we have to have a front license plate, but with Antique Plates (QQ in NJ), you don't have to have the registered NJ plate in front, so I mounted some jump wings on my 82nd Airborne vehicle:

Hope this suggestion helps. It's not the best mounting setup, but it keeps the rear plate lower on the vehicle and looking more "normal" for street use.

Thanks for the info Bob and Bikerman. I do want to have a lighted rear plate and Bob's set up is pretty easy to do.

The front plate, since in Texas it is a requirement to have one as well, I am thinking a front plate holder and U bolts to wrap around the bumper holding it in place. To match up with the U bolts will require drilling holes in the plate holder which is no problem.

Thanks for the input!!!

I used a piece of angle iron for the front. I drilled two holes to match the holes for the differential guard and bolted the angle to that and then bolted the license plate to the angle. No new holes in mutt required that way.

That's a great idea for the front plate, thanks Rick.

I attached the front license plate bracket to a spare towing loop. no holes in the jeep, and at a show i just pull the pin and put the original loop back on...

Someone has told me that you do not need a front tag in NJ on antique vehicles any more. Took mine off. We will see. What the law says and what the cops say are usually two different things.

Hey Rick...

I searched high and low online for NJ Motor Vehicle regulations pertaining to the display of the NJ QQ (antique) front plate, but cannot come up with a definitive answer in writing as to whether or not you are allowed to eliminate the front plate in NJ when you have an antique car on QQ plates.

But I can tell you that I was told by MV officials in the early 1990s that I do not have to display a front tag, and therefore I have been running my 1961 Corvette with no front tag since 1993 and my M151A2 since 2003 with no front tag and been around cops many times and none of them have ever questioned it.

That's not to say that you, living where you are and doing what you do (living on the edge with local law enforcement, to include violating local building codes, shooting off firearms within city limits and sicking your dogs on completely docile neighbors who only wake you up every other night with loud chain saws and unmuffled dirt bikes at 1 in the morning) are in any way "asking for it" and "looking for a ticket" when retaliating because of NJ Motor Vehicle regulations.

No... just kidding buddy.. but it's always fun to get into it with you. When are we going to get together again so I can bring my Army .45 over to the house and take a couple of "practice shots" at the neighbor's ATV with no muffler?

He's gone but I have some druggies you can use for target practice.
I have been informed by the detectives that I can not shoot at the druggies trying to steal my stuff again. I informed the detectives that if I had shot AT them they would have been much easier to catch since they would still be at the scene. What it boils down to is the law is on the side of the thieves in NJ. The only LEGAL way to keep them from taking your stuff is to physically restrain them until the cops get there. The thieves know that and will walk right past you with your stuff knowing that you against three or four of them probably is not going to happen. No it is not legal to club them or stab them either. Only restrain them. My neighbors have figured the next time they get caught everyone is called except the police and things will be handled a little differently. two more years and I am out of here.
