New MUTT added to the fold

Post by pinz712 » Mon Mar 03, 2008 7:25 pm

Picked up today this 1998 M151A2 Encore - These were built with M151A2 running gear, engine, ect. assembled on a new body.
Runs great just been sitting outside for a couple years. Soon to be painted Desert Tan. I used to work for Encore in 97 - 98 as a buyer before they want belly up.

Encore help

Post by pinz712 » Tue Mar 04, 2008 4:44 am

I dont know if expert  is the correct term but I will help as much as possible. Aside from the mods like a tailgate or the ROPS mounting and that it lacks shovel/axe mounting points but its pretty much your basic MUTT. I will be making some design changes before it gets a desert tan paint job.

pinz712,

Welcome aboard. Can you give me the manufacturers name from the tires on your vehicle? I'm looking for a nice road tire.

Your Encore M151A2 is sweet.

I always liked the Encore over the Carolina Growler, the design is nearly identical and the falt fender A2 look suits me as the better older style design. Nate and I are glad to have you on board for sure.

Now didn't some of the Enclore M151 series Jeeps have tail gates???

Man I would love to find one of those tail gates as I would like to add one to Nate's 1963 Willys M151 project we will begin on this summer sometime. I also am thinking about matching up a M151A1 demil front end with a XM416A trailer I desegned and built last year.

I redesigned the M416 trailer and made 3 in all, one I sold to a buddy of my in California the second I want to adapt to mount into a rear pick up truck type section and mount it up with the M151A1 demil front end,

The 3rd trailer is going to be used with our M151-LC after I add a lift kit to the rear traling arms I installed on the trailer.

This is a distant future project perhaps next summer or fall at the soonest.

These rigs cost money and take time to build and my wife don't give me a lot of money...LOL

LOve you Encore Jeep man awesome

tailgate

Post by pinz712 » Tue Mar 04, 2008 1:29 pm

Yes it has a tailgate - simple design though - Square tubing welded in a rectangle with flat sheet welded inside. I will take a pic tomorrow.

If you are looking for good road and off road tires, go to Dunlop tires and look at the Wrangler m/s. I put a set on my 151 and they are great in the snow and mud. I think it was the Wrangler anyway.

Wrangler is a Goodyear tire, not Dunlop. I have the Wrangler Silent Armor tires on my pickup, and really like them. They have belts made of kevlar instead of steel. Good traction, no tire noise, and no flats (so far) even though I drive a lot of gravel. Here is a link to Goodyear's light truck tire page.

I will have to slide down to the barn and see what they are called. May be awhile before I get back up hill through the snow.

I would never cut a gate into a Mutt but that is one feature of the Encore that makes it appealing to me, besides the heavier metal and welded seams. What is the rusty spot on the back? Looks like something was sanded off and not repainted.

rusty spot

Post by pinz712 » Sat Mar 15, 2008 9:07 pm

There was a license plate mount - bent. I removed it. Today after looking at the drop down tailgate and the bumperettes in the wrong position (upside down too) I decided to redisign the tailgate setup. Going to ditch the drop down gate instead replacing it with a swing out gate that mounts flush to the rear of the body with the spare and Jerry can attached to the gate. This will get rid of the separate spare tire mount that rested on the pintle hitch. Also moving the bumperettes to a more correct position.

Mods to the Encore

Post by pinz712 » Fri Mar 28, 2008 5:23 am

Been busy building .50 cal rifles but have had time to make a couple mods.
Added the slave plug for jump starting.
Image
And mil top and bows - had to mod the bows to get the top to sit lower - removed 1 1/2 inches and welded back together.

Also will be removing the tailgate and modifying the rear to match the mutt so the top mounts like it should.

I think you should keep the tailgate...why not modify the tailgate to look like the rear end of a M151. I think it would be more useful that way and you would have a one of a kind!!!

On the next basket case M151 I find I think I will add a tailgate...More useful that way.
