When you find another one that's closer geographically and you've looked it over and are ready to put down the money, make a trip to your local DMV office and walk right up to the title clerk and ask her point blank about the particular title situation with the jeep you are contemplating buying. The one thing you are probably going to want to do is make sure the title papers say something like, AMG 2DR WAGON or something like that. Not 1969 M151A1. Once you flip the title into your name, you'll also definitely want to ask for the New Jersey QQ plates (historic vehicle). Much cheaper on insurance but more importantly, you won't have to go thru state inspection and have some former military guy recognizing it and flagging it. When I got my QQ plates I quietly went back outside and ran like a thief in the night.
Bob thanks for posting the above. Good advice. My A2 came from NV and actually said "M151" on the Nevada title (doesn't on the Va title as Va DMV doesn't recogize that "name").

I thought you were in the American Army......Just kidding....
Rickf wrote:Bob, You got yours before 911. Remember where those pilots that crashed into the WTC got there illegal paperwork? Yup, NJ DMV! They have cracked down to the point of being ridiculous now.
Thought that they got their IDs through VA DMV? I know right after the attacks, VADMV (also) got real anal retentive about paper work. Maybe it was that way with all of the DMVs?
now I have to find all that stuff again, do they think I morphed into someone else? .

DaninNM wrote:IN NEW MEXICO
An agent of the MV Dept inspects the VIN Number
The title company takes the form from the VIN ins[pection and does an NCIC check to see if the vehicle was stolen
If there's a hit they check with the other state since some vehicle numbers are duplicated
if not, then the title company generates a New Mexico title for the vehicle
cost 1 bond for the VIN inspection (protects the state from suit over issuing title) about a $100
title itself $25
title co. fee $20
not you do not have to register for the road.....only title! cheaper
takes about three weeks to get the paperwork.........vehicle has to be in New Mexico for VIN inspection

Rickf wrote:That works fine until you walk in with a M-151A1. That is not in their data base so now the entire agency screams to a stop. The on duty police officer now has his hand on his weapon and everyone is staring at you! Been there, done that. Really, not quite that drastic but close. If it is not in their data base then they do not want to deal with it and at best you will have to go to Trenton personally and press your case there. Last I heard they had closed that office to walk-ins due to budget cuts. Along with the special inspection units you would have to go to next. I hate this state!

It's not really a big deal in the state of NJ until you fork over some serious personal cash for a known illicit vehicle, tow it into the state, park it in your yard and then try to get it legally titled and registered in the state of NJ, depending on what mood the DMV is in that day to accept your vehicle's paperwork. Really no big deal at all.
