Siren Location
Guys can anyone help me out here...i am looking for pictures of Medical Jeeps with sirens fitted to them.
I am in the process of buying a siren for my girlfriend Michelles 42MB which is marked as a Medical Priority Jeep of the 50th Field Hospital ACSZ-COMZ ETO and just need to locate the "correct" if there was one posistion for the siren.
Many thanks guys
Lloyd

Lloyd,
I suppose I've looked at large number of jeep pics over the years and I've come to the conclusion that fitting a siren on a WW11 jeep is a restorers whim. I'll always go along with something that can be backed up by a period photo if it wasn't done by the manual, but I think the siren is not really at home on the jeep. Maybe the MASH jeeps in Korea....????
Derek.

Hi Derek
Hello Derek good to meet you at Beltring....so this is one of those "quirks" that you see on many a restored MB/GPW but is not "technically" correct.
So a medical jeep would not have had a siren fitted as per T and OE it would have only been the ambulances.
And the occaisional MP jeep...........
Regards
Lloyd

I'd say that the MP jeeps were likely to have a siren more than any others. While the "Vixen Tor" jeep was a General's jeep, I don't remember if it had a siren. Maybe just the escort jeeps would have hand them. That kind of stuff attracts snipers, mortars and 88's I would imagine. Patton went for a armored car or scout car in addition to jeeps but he preferred those trumpet style horns to announce his arrival.
Derek's dim view of so many WWII jeeps fitted with sirens matches my own thoughts, however as a Medical Jeep, it might have been the kind of "field modification" done to make the delivery of plasma or supplies through crowded rear areas quicker. Personally I think while food, ammo and soldiers needed to move fast to the front, if you waited for supplies while wounded lay unattended you would set a bad example. That kind of vehicle would make sense to get a siren to get it through crowded road nets as fast as possible. An ambulance with a siren that gets wounded to the field hospital that has to wait for supplies to arrive is wasted if the supplies the doctors and nurses need are stuck in traffic.
I think you'd have a good case for "logic" here, but as Derek said, a photo or two of some hospital vehicles/jeeps with one fitted would be great to support that contention. Check the internet for all the WWII field hospital references and look for photos.
OK....if you do....the standard WWII six and twelve volt sirens do not have a red light on them. Therefore you can mount it behind the BODL on the left fender. This is helpful as you can still check the oil, do the filter, check the fan belt and battery without another hunk of steel in your way. The wiring is easier that way also. I don't know if the MB has a BODL on it, but making sure where the holes in the fender for where the wire for the light goes and the mounting holes for the siren go is important.

Christophe,
I can't really decide if it's a siren or a second B/O driving light. Pictures of jeeps with one on either fender are fairly common in comparison to pics of jeeps with sirens. I have actually turned up a very clear pic of a Generals jeep in the US with a siren on the passenger side fender but it's nothing like the siren that everyone seems to pay top dollar for and then fit to their vehicle.
Derek.

Derek
My GPW was a MP jeep at Alamagordo NM, during WWII and also served in the Navajo program. So I have the holes to prove it. I will take pic's and measurements and send them to Jon for posting. I was an MP during my tour in the National guard. I think I may know what I am talking about-not spouting BS here.
GPW has the siren behind the B.O. Light and the Red light on the right fender. This may have been a field mod but it stinks of originality in that there are NO other holes to be had or welded shut. This Veh was also used as a Fire fighting veh after the war in Farmington NM.
Go Figure.
Cheers
Paulie

Paulie,
I'm sure there were some jeeps legitimately fitted with sirens during the war and if I had to choose I would have MPs and Medical jeeps on the list. However this doesn't alter the fact that there don't seem to be many period pictures with sirens showing. When you look at the recon jeep at the show with the 'A' frame, post mount, dash mount and siren, in your heart you know that it's not quite right. Then you find every second jeep in the show is also fitted with one.
I've drawn the line at fitting one of these even with the correct button switch...
Derek.

I agree
I agree with you Derek that most re enactor Jeeps have all the "bells and whistles" etc etc...
Thanks also Jon ,Paulie and Christophe
I think then after deliberation that a siren "could" seen to be technically "correct" on a Med jeep.
Thanks to all guys appreciated.

In the Australia Army some Military Police had them also....albeit not your standard Federal Brand....
As for what I'll put on mine....better to have a siren than a M31/M31C mount which I can't put a weapon on....Thank you Australian Gum'mint.... A/holes...
Mine will be a MP jeep as used by Australian Forces in PNG.
Pics below.....

The good thing is...they were both White and OD.....depends on location...
In PNG they were OD.....
Some more pics to drool over.... can't see the siren due to the way the photos were taken, but you get the general idea I'm sure.....love the W/S sheeting ....another drool point...
But check the first pic.....it's dripping in Chrome like a Detroit Designers wet dream......even the reflector bezels......hummmm....
AND......Check the top pic B/O light.....It isn't...It's a Red light
btw.....Yes..... I do have a drawing of the Siren Location on the right fender . Siren-Loc.gif
