Turn signals on a GPW ??

Postby Marco GPW 81877 » Fri Sep 17, 2004 7:43 am

Hello people,

are there any people out there who have a system on your GPW or MB ? I don't know the rules yet here in Holland, but I think that by law tey are required. Is there a way to make a system to have turning signals, using the original light fittings without installing too many switches in sight ?

There are so many of us on this forum, so there must be some one out there with a nice sollution ...

Cheers from Amsterdam

Try Bob's site, he has installed signals and they look great. Nice to let the other drivers know what you are thinking, or you could just leave one signal on and pi** them off! :D

Pat,

yep the electronics are OK, now I need something to avoid the extra unit on the steering tube. I was thinking of installing an extra switch with 3 postions: left, off and right on the dashboard. Any one who had the same idea ?
Thanks for the link !

In Belgium they are not requierd check with the APK if they are requierd in holland if you register it as an oldtimer it also may not be nescessary to instal them. That way you don't have to drill holes that arent supposed to be there. If I drive a jeep I use my arm to give signals works fine.

Here is a nice setup on Ren's site that requires no permanent mods to your Jeep.

I guess it all depends on what you intend to use your jeep for. I'm leary of only having lights at the rear but that's your call...as the developer says, "use at your own risk". Me? Mine is a compromise. You could add plugs so that you could disconnect the extra lights and find existing holes to mount to or use magnets or clamps. I liked the brightness and the smallness of the LED lights. The draw back was that I couldn't figure out how to add enough load to the line to get them to flash! So I cheated and added two regular marker lights to the system (they're tucked into the engine compartment alongside the radiator.

My jeep is for driving. If your's is for show then by all means don't dress it up without anything that isn't temporary.

Hand singles are nice but when I started adding the signals in North Dakota--wintertime driving made that less then fun...

Hi guys,

I found out now that with the top down you are aloud to use hand signals here, but with top up you always need a passenger in the right seat to do the work for you :D

The option I saw with the removable system is nice for getting the Jeep to and from events, but for regular road use ...

Thanks

Marco,

It looks like Bob's turn signal set up could easily be modified to use a magnetic mounting system. This would avoid drilling holes and keep your jeep stock for shows or re-enactments. It might require adding an earth ground return wire to each light. Standard 2 conductor black lamp "zip" cord could be used.

I might try this mod myself.
