Solex Carb Issue
MB is turning over, fuel pump pumping, fuel getting to carb, yet not starting. Replacement Solex, trying to start using choke and throttle. Any suggestions to get it started? Replacement after parts on old carb broke. Might I have a bad carb as after reading past threads that may be an issue?
Ideas, suggestions?
THANKS!
Jeff

Re: Solex Carb Issue
No throttle or pumping the pedal. Make sure the fuel is getting to the float bowl. Needle & seat control this aspect could be closed & not letting fuel in.
Choke is actually excess fuel for starting & doesn't work like a choke. Start & when the engine starts running rough after a minute or 2 push in.

Re: Solex Carb Issue
What John said with a little more detail.
Solex does not have a choke plate, like Carter WO. It has an Enrichment Circuit.
When starting cold, pull the choke which opens the enrichment valve and do not give any throttle. Opening the throttle during cranking defeats the enrichment circuit. The throttle must stay completely closed, until the engine starts and warms up a bit. Then close the "choke" and you are ready to go.

Re: Solex Carb Issue
Thanks for that information Mike, i sometimes used to press on throttle and when cold, it usually fires the 3rd or 4th time, would this make a first time fire if i didnt touch the throttle ?

Re: Solex Carb Issue
With the WO carb, a little throttle would help starting but with the Solex, any throttle at all defeats the enrichment process and makes cold starting more difficult, if not impossible.
The enrichment circuit on a Solex, is a seperate passage that goes around the carb. throat and comes in under the throttle plate. When the "choke" is applied, a valve is opened in the enrichment circuit and the fuel is pulled through the side passage, into the engine. If the throtlle is opened during starting, no fuel is pulled through the enrichment circuit and the cold engine is too lean to start.

Re: Solex Carb Issue
Well, my jeep has stood for 4 weeks, (due to a holiday), after reading these threads, i gave it more choke, and pulled the throttle out slightly. Expecting four or five turnovers, yes its been freezing over here, it fired up first time, so thanks to John and Mike. You never stop learning with a jeep.

Re: Solex Carb Issue
Ive had a solex on my jeep for 11 yrs and as they say when cold max choke even though its not a choke very little if any throttle. As soon as it starts start pushing in the choke as needed to achieve idle with the choke pushed all the way in. Dont pump the pedal when trying to start also

Re: Solex Carb Issue
In the UK [in particular] the Land Rover using a similar Solex carburettor is started using an identical fashion/method to how the Jeep L134 needs to be started. So guys just investigate how the LR owners book suggests one starts their engine.
