Overdrive snap ring sizes - they differ!

Post by tamnalan » Mon Dec 05, 2016 5:13 pm

I've been enjoying the cj-2a forum. A recent discussion popped up there about catastrophic overdrive failures, where the bowl gear would loosen and wreak havoc. There seems to be a fair number of recent cases.

Be advised that Advance Adaptors' snap ring is now much larger than some older versions. If yours look like the version that has holes for pliers in the photos below... my advice is to replace them ASAP with the current model without the holes.

Looks like I should be ordering a new snap ring! (Although I have a lot of miles on it without issue)

I later found an old snap ring that has holes and is the larger size. So the holes themselves are not a guarantee that the ring is small. I'm now wondering if a batch of the smaller, "holes" rings simply showed up last year. Rings produced longer ago may be ok. Any overdrive installs done years ago might have the older larger rings. Installation surely is a factor too. I've been pulling the special nut to 120 ft lbs, after making sure the threads are clean.
