Solid state electronic Distributor?

Post by Able502 » Sat Jan 19, 2013 5:23 pm

Hi All,

I was replacing the points on my distributor recently and was looking for usefull tips on doing so, When i came across these Electronic distributors, Has anyone had any experience with these? How well do they work? how easy are they to install?

Im thinking of replacing my old distributor with one of these because i find the points difficult to set on my own.

Cheers and thanks for your input! :D

I don't know what brand of electronic distributor you mean, but I bought a Pertonix http://www.pertronix.com/default.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; set-up at a swap meet that was supposed to fit in my distributor on my GPW. I have no idea whether it fits the GPW or not because I installed it in my '55 Willys plow truck instead since it apparently fit that application as well with a small change with help from their tech support guys. I've had no issues with it at all for several years now even though I abused it many times. By abuse I mean jumping the 6 volt truck with a 12 volt vehicle & not shutting the ignition off immediately if the the truck dies & is sitting there for a few minutes with the key on.

I have just bought a couple of sets of replacement points advertised on e-Bay by POWERSPARK (Powerspark Ignition Ltd)
The e-bay number is : 130 826 549 856, and they cost £39.95; I am sure they ship worldwide.
As my GPW has been converted to 12v, I enquired if this would affect them. Apparently they function from 6v to 14v.so no problems.

Last year I bought a replacement POWERSPARK complete Distributor for my Jaguar from these people and am well pleased with it.

If your distributer is GOOD....no wobble or anything and works good when you do the points correctly...I would just get the Pertronix retrofit kit...works on an LED....I have them in all three of my jeeps ....install is easier then doing points....they sell both a 6volt and 12 volt model.....if you have distributer problems then you might want to go with the one Ron is selling.....the pertronix is NOT a fully electronic ignition....but it DOES eliminate points adjusting and fouling. hope this helps

Hello Dave,
Sure will let you know how I get on. Hope to do it tomorrow - it has been so cold and I had 10" snow this last week - and I live in Devon!!
I was very impressed with their service - they came next day via courier.
It consists of the complete base plate with trigger attached and a magnetic ring to fit over the centre shaft.
Regards

The weather was better today and all the snow gone.
I fitted the Powerspark set up in about 20 mins this morning. there was no instructions with it, so I guessed that the RED lead was POSITIVE and the BLUE one NEGATIVE.
POS went on the Coil power terminal, and the NEGATIVE on the distributor terminal
I removed the points complete with base plate and put the new Powerspark kit in, placed the trigger ring over the centre of the distributor shaft on top of the 4 cam lobes, replaced the distributor arm, and fired it up. Perfect!
No need to re-time, just fit. No problems so far.......
The photos show the new set up - with the distributor rotor arm left off for clarity.
I noticed since last I was in this area the distributor body has a coating of rust from condensation!! I plan some maintenance work next month and will tidy up the loose wires and put them into some sleeving, and have the distributor out and give it a protective coat of paint at the same time

Nice kit! It's about 1/2 the price of the Pertronix kit and works with any voltage, too (6,8 or 12) !

Does the dust cover of the IAD-4008 fit over the reluctor? Will it fit the IAD-4705? How about the civilian model distributors with vacuum advance?

Hello Marty
I don't know the answers to your questions. In the first case I would say it may fit, but I don't have access to a dust cap to test.
The base plate is a fabricated one drilled and tapped especially for the module. From my limited knowledge of the vacuum distributor, I would hazzard a guess that it would not fit as supplied. As the module is only held onto the base plate by a couple of screws, then it may well be possible to remove the points and condenser and carefully fit the module onto the vacuum base plate. It would, of course, have to match the clearances of the one supplied, but these are quite generous and forgiving - so I imagine a relatively skilled and careful person could make it work.
The set I fitted did not require any adjustment to the timimg, as I guess the elctronic trigger is positioned in exactly the same place as the points, although the modified set might need re-timing as a precaution.

I have a Land Rover Distributor that has vac a/r and the module looks identical, also the one I fitted to my Replica "C" Type Jaguar with a 4.2 litre engine is also the same - and they all come from the same supplier (Simonbloc)

I have the Pertronix one and the cover fits......can't see this being different as it all fits UNDER where the cover goes
