Extra brake lights / turn signals

Postby Ingo » Sun Mar 04, 2012 8:39 am

Hi Folks: Who has some extra brake lights and turn lights on your jeep? Originals are a bit dark and small. And with the bustle rack it is worse.

Want to be visible on public roads. Not to be as unlucky as Marc Open...
ANy suggestions or ideas about that?

Greetz

Well, if you need to have extra brake lights / turn signals, why not those which were used on older trucks:

or this one, as it was/is used by the Austrian Army:

Hi Ingo,

Mount some LED multi voltage lamps onto a plank and tie to the bussle basket and plug into the trailer socket.

That way you get high visibility while driving but still able to quickly remove for display  .

Good luck

Those larger lights incorporating an indicator are still used by trucks, and for some vehicles in the Kit Car world.
There are two sizes, both readily available, I believe the manufacturer is Hella.

I have heard of bustle racks being fitted with cycle type LED's as markers.

Personally I will go with the trailer board idea, without trailer-triangles, as it is easily removed and highly visible,
and the GPW is fitted with a hidden 7pin socket, with indicators,
For my MBT I have a pair of those small Hella combination ones,
You can't be too careful today, as modern traffic moves so fast, and they easily underestimate your speed (or lack of it!)

Yeah, right. Remember Marc Open, he wasn´t seen on a dark road by a truck driver.

I will put on two Hella lights underneath that basket. The cable is long enough to fix them also on the trailer.
I have the triangle shaped reflectors with some magnet pins (from enbay) on the back of the trailer. Could be done away within seconds. The extra lights are with 2 wingnuts, away in 2 minutes.
If I´ll drive at night, I will put on a light stick on the antenna. Couldn´t be wrong, eh?

Hi Ingo,

Here come two pics of my Willys and Bantam. That's how I do it:

Additional to the original lights and reflectors I mounted the light as they are necessary for driving in the streets.

Hi Ingo,

Yes still alife! :D
And still restauring my Willys... I hope it will be ready soon so that I can spend much time outside driving this year!
I will go on assembling next weekend.
All the aditional lights are not fixed permanentely to Jeep and trailer. It needs to loosen only a few screws and cable to get these light off the vehicle so that it's looks very original
without any special lights. Only the front turn signals have to be worked on. I don't know how yet...

Cheers,
Lars
