Dual Gas can carrier idea
I'm contemplating building a bolt on dual gas can carrier that will fit where the original can carrier is mounted to the back panel. It will bolt on to the back panel and have a support down to the bumperette mounting bolts. Most likely I'll build it as a bracket to mount two original jerry can brackets, side by side, cans rotated 90* from the original. I need more range for my desert trips!
A question that I have is has anyone seen any original WW2 or Korean war pics with a similar arrangement?

I have seen a picture taken during WWII with that configuration posted on this sight about a year ago.

Re: Dual Gas can carrier idea
emmando22, A bustle basket would be good for carrying all the light camping gear. I do have a 1/4t M100 trailer that would carry my extra gear, too, if I were to take some passsengers with me, it would use that. I usually go camping solo, I remove the back seat, and all my gear fits pretty well, then.
As it is, I had to carry my extra 5 gallon can in my passenger front floor area the last trip I took to the desert. I'd rather have it mounted in the rear. I've seen alot of folks' jeeps and actual pictures of WW2 jeeps where the extra can is mounted to the passenger front fender or side step area, which would work well, but I don't want to add any holes to the jeep tub.
Bob Shaw, I searched around on the "G" to try to find the dual can picture, no luck Any chance you know where to find it?
When I fabricate the bracket, I'll post some pics and dimensions! It will be a pure bolt on into existing holes. I picked up a second WW2 jerry can bracket at the local thrift store for $9, it even has the correct strap! Basically, I'm thinking I will make a vertical plate to bolt where the original can bracket mounts to the tail panel, then, at a right angle to it, another plate twice the size of the bottom of the original can brackets, and weld it to the vertical plate. There will be an angle iron brace from the bottom of the bracket to the two upper bumperette mounting bolts. The two jerry can brackets will be bolted together back to back, with another plate sandwiched in between that will act as a gusset between the horizontal and vertical plates. Most of the weight will be supported by the brace to the bumperette holes. The two can brackets will also bolt to the horizontal plate. All the plates will probably be 10 guage sheet steel. The angle iron, probably 1" wide by 1/8" thick. I should be able to get the supplies from the scraps pile at the local steel supplier pretty cheap.

Re: Dual Gas can carrier idea
Marty...another location is the front bumper. You can use the four holes in the bottom of regular carrier and fashion some "U" bolts or a piece of flat steel and some bolts so you can add one carrier and one can to each side. I would turn them so they are sideways from the original mounting and are sitting on the front bumper and on each frame rail so that airflow to the radiator is not impared.
Each can weighs about 20 kilos when full plus the carrier so if you relocate almost 90 lbs from the REAR of your jeep to the FRONT of the jeep you will help with the weights and balances especially in 2wd and even in 4wd I think. It would be a simple bolt-on, or bolt-off set up and that way you can use the regular rear mount and put two on the front adding another 15 gallons to your capacity.

Great idea. Chuck! Using the front bumper location for the 5 gallon water cans I usually bring would be safer than gas up front, too! I would have to mount them to the frame rails and bumper gussets as I'm running a tandem tow bar on the front. I'll look into seeing how they will fit!

Re: Dual Gas can carrier idea
Marty...I was looking at the mounting plate on a Capstan Winch and how it is basically FLAT across the frame horns behind the bumper to the grill....if you fabricated a plate that bolted on like that, then you could attach the carriers to that in a fore & aft manner and the whole shebang will bolt on in a couple minutes....I do agree that having 10 gallons of gas on the front has some issues, but having five gallons on the rear is sort of the same issue although it is mounted higher. It could be wider than the frame horns and once you sort out how you wanted the two cans to be arranged, you would know how wide to allow the plate to be.
Please post some pics of whatever you come up with....good ideas for others who off-road or just want to pack a ton of stuff for a trip on fire roads in the back country are always interesting.

Making a plate for the front and attaching it to the frame rails would be easy, since my bumper gussets are bolted on. A can rack could be made from angle iron, too. I will be taking pics of it when I make it for sure!

I'm interested too, Marty. Some of us who want to do the MVPA AL-Can trip will want to carry extra gas and water. I was going to mount a carrier on my M-100 but your ideas sound better.

Hootin Annie was a jeep with the dual jerrycans at the back.
Check out this amazing website from the 99th battalion for more info and pictures from that jeep:

Great Pictures, besides there being a double gas cans on the back. This is what I think is a rare pictue of the jeep being used during war time that still has the shovel, axe and decon STILL mounted.
