Re: Dual Gas can carrier idea
Looks like the fourth picture of the original 99ths' jeeps shows a brace from underneath, the fifth pic shows one on the side going up.

Two different jeeps, two different mounts. The one with the brace from underneath has the cans side to side, and the other one, with the brace on the side going up has the cans mounted front to back.Marty, SoCal wrote:Looks like the fourth picture of the original 99ths' jeeps shows a brace from underneath, the fifth pic shows one on the side going up.

GREAT!!! Is it your Dodge that was used in Stokkem celebrations in September? I received some photos where one showed a 99th marked WC-51. Thanks for helping in keeping the 99th History alive!lightningdivision wrote:Thanks for the pictures Erik.real nice jeep and big fan of Your website. My dodge WC-51 has the 99th markings.

I have studied these photos over by enlarging the originals and see no evidence that "Hootin Annie" (the first 4 pictures) had any supporting braces. You see otherwise?Cobra Doc wrote:Two different jeeps, two different mounts. Thats correct.I was the SSGT in one of the pictures. We rebadged to the 1Army patch and repainted the markings of the vehicles for this event. To bad we could not bring more vehicles and reenacters for this event. We got a guy in our club,Kristof from Stokkem, who wants to built his own Annie jeep and I was looking for more info on the dual jerrycan system.Seems like they have more ways to built them. Thanks for the great and clear pictures.

Re: Dual Gas can carrier idea
If you want more pictures to build another Hootin Annie jeep, I have a lot of pictures and can help you with the details. I have may be a total of 12-15 pictures taken off this jeep from the time in England until Nov 44. I think the dual cans were added just prior to the invasion. I have a photo taken in Wales just before D-day and it had only a single can. Photos taken in Cherburg just after the 99th had landed on the 22nd June shows dual cans. The wire cutter was added after the landing, but before they were attached to the 2nd Armored and took part in the Canal Drive.

This is the picture, the jeep with the snow on it.
http://img151.imageshack.us/i/can4y.jpg/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It looks like a possible brace between the right side of the left bumperette to the lower right edge of the right can carrier, it's a 45* angled straight line between the two that looks to me to be a tube support (I see it centered just below the right can bracket). Might also be one brace straight up between the cans to the center of the bumperette, just above the "9" there's a straight line, too.
It might be shallow enough of an angle, hiding in the shadows, or added later so it doesn't show in the other pics? Although zooming in on the picture, the 45* line might be the angle for the pintle opening on the rear tub What about the one going straight up? Maybe just another shadow?
Eric, your original pics might be more clear than the scans.

Re: Dual Gas can carrier idea
It is hard to see, but you may be right that there is a support (tube) between lower front bolt holding the holders together and upper/inside bumprette bolt.
I will see what I can find out.

Bringing an old post back up, I saw these D-Day before and after pics a few times here on the "G". The ninth one down is in St.Lo, it shows a jeep with dual cans and you can see the brace under it!

Ok, has anyone taken a look at Vixen Tor ? Ike's Jeep. Two gas cans in back as well, but in the "normal " positions.

Vixen Tor!
Looks like they bolted two straps from the bottom of the rear can bracket and welded them to the left bumperette (Both pics from JeepDraw by Gary Linger):

Re: Dual Gas can carrier idea
Could you hang a couple of can brackets on your teardrop? I used three for the AC12 trip: two for fuel and one for water. All on the very back to help reduce tongue weight.

Re: Dual Gas can carrier idea
Yes, I'm planning on adding them to the teardrop! I'm struggling with not enough tongue weight due to the items I have in the back of it while travelling. (It has not effected stability, though) I'm working on adding a spare tire bracket to the front of it for an additional 33" spare and I will probably have good balance then. If I do, two can brackets will go above the wheels on the sides for neutral balance. I plan on adding a spout to the rear lower side of the water can so I won't need to remove the can from the bracket to get water out of it for cooking, etc.

Re: Dual Gas can carrier idea
My teardrop ended up with a little more tongue weight than I wanted. It's ok for the jeep but is hard on my back. That water tap idea seems a good one. When I was planning my build I stumbled across somebody's off-road teardrop thread that mentioned it too.
