Hi,
It is hard to say which country or who originated this "Mod" Possibly just an idea some guy came up with & the idea caught on.

My March 45 GPW has this mod too, ex greek but no idea when or where it was done. I'm guessing it was before it went to Greece as all they seemed to do was chop bits off...
Some people are like slinkies, not much good for anything but they bring a smile to your face when pushed down the stairs.

I don't know that I'd call it all "Jeep Theft" more likely just call it "Midnight Misapproiation".
My understanding from my Dad(WW2) was that in some groups it was common to pull the Rotor when parked overnight.
In this case his group placed the rotor on top of the left rear wheel for easy access.
Of course this was not done in the front line area where their Jeeps were left ready to start.

One very easy anti-theft device for the points type distributors is a switch, one side hooked up to the "-" side of the coil and the other grounded to the body/chassis. When the switch is on, the ignition system will "think" the points are always closed and the engine will not start even if the coil is hotwired straight from the battery. Works every time and people can not figure it out.......

I would guess you have never seen a real pro at work. A repo man finds this a simple problem, much less a thief.Park another car behind your Jeep....
Thief or Joyrider simply pops the car's column lock, rolls it out into the street and drives off with the jeep while the car is setting in the middle of the street with it's alarm chirpping.
If it ain't done right, it ain't done.

I grew up when motorcycles had toggle kill switches and we left our homes unlocked.Triplecdad

Uh, Tanker, how do I say this politely? It just seems you know an awful lot about that last subject. Maybe too much . . .
Joining the service provided me a new view of life and of those who would gladly remove any items you had laying around loose.
This served me well when, while in Hawaii, my sports car turned up missing one morning after I had camped out in a young lady's front room.
I had no sooner called the the Five "O" when I found my ride just down the road. A "Blue Light Special 442" was just pulling up to ease the traffic jam caused by the Spitfire laying dead in the middle of the lane.
My security system of electric fuel pump, with toggle switch and a fuel cut off valve in the trunk saved the day and proved to the Cops that I had not parked in the middle of the road!
Experience seldom beats Crimp One Off House luck but it does have its times.
If it ain't done right, it ain't done.

Re: WW2 Jeep Anti Theft Device
Hi,
I have seen this jeep for sale in France some months ago with this interesting mod for Anti Theft I suppose.
It seems to be a wartime mod ?
