I'm new to the restoration circit, plus I don't know that much history about the Jeeps as others but I thought they filled the hat channels with wood because of a shortage of steel that was turned over for the war effort. To me the jeep was a simple, easy to buld in numbers, and just built for the war (throw-a-way Jeeps) yeah right ha ha:wink:

...so I thought they just churned them out like rabbits cuz they also needed steel and iron for trucks, tanks, half -Tee's, ships, bombs, planes, etc, etc.

I was thinking of useing oak for my hat channels. What has everyone else used??

I have been told that it was tulip poplar by an arborist that frequents the Gee. I think I read somewhere that it was birch (I don't think that it's birch though). The pieces that I've removed are not oak.
