Well - I finally took the plunge and found a capsten. Just the winch at the moment plus a mounting plate.
It turns really well and smooth. I'm thinking of just mounting it at the moment while I source the rest.

A little question on the lube side. There is a filler hole on the top and what seems to be a drain plug on the bottom.
So was the whole thing packed with grease or what ?

I will need to replace the gasket - where can I find that ?
And I'll be looking around for the rest of the stuff.
I know Eagleparts have good NOS stuff but pricey.
Are there other sources in Europe ?

Anyone got a breakdown diagram ?
I have the mounting instructions from DavidA's site but there is no breakdown drawing.

Hi David,
I used 85/140 gear oil in mine. Different parts are available from different sources although Eagle probably has the widest stock. I think Ron may have gaskets.

Thanks - I'll check that out.
I now have the mounting plate too. Seems I have to take off the bumper to fit it. And grind off the rivets.
Any advice or pitfalls to doing this ?
I guess the mounting plate sits flat against the inside of the bumper once in place.

Hi David,
I think it should but mine needed a thin spacer. Do you realise the plate sits on top of the chassis on an MB and below the top flange on a GPW?

I made the gaskets myself, not too complicated...
Don't be disappointed, you won't be able to get that thing absolutely dry.

There's a breakdown drawing of the winch in the Becker book, along with excellent mounting instructions of the whole winch system.

I'd mount the plate like this:

Remove the four rivets.
Remove the front bumper
Mount the winch plate with four bolts, use the holes where the rivets have been.
Now drill hole number 5 and 6 through the plate and the frame.
Install bolt 5 and 6.
Mount the front bumper with the plate in place and drill through bumper and plate for the two front mounting bolts
The measurements for these holes are in the Becker book.

The winch get's a pint of oil, that's 0,945 litres.
It can be quite annoying to get the winch filled through that small hole, as the thick oil pours VERY slowly...

Hope this helps.

I just came across a Braden capstan off of a 48cj2a, I have everything, it's all there, let me know if anybody is interested. Might let it for the right price, all parts are NOS

How can they be NOS if you removed them from a CJ2a ?

"The winch get's a pint of oil, that's 0,945 litres."

EJB, a pint is 1/2 a quart, so it would be less than 1/2 a liter! (.4725 l)

If the gasket does not set end play of the bearings etc. inside the winch, gear oil safe RTV silicone sealer will make a better seal against the gear oil leaking out. Fill in any voids or gaps in the mating surfaces better.

Hope this helps!

Ooops.... shame on me, you're right.
Then the winch get's a quart, almost one liter.

Thank you for the correction!

Well I mounted the winch head and plate on the jeep today. A perfect fit.
Just drilled through the frame rivets, chiseled off the rivet heads and drilled the extra holes and the plate fitted great - proves my frame's square too.
I've started sourcing the other parts but the prices are high so it'll take a while to get it all together as cash is tight.
The winch head I found is navy grey - for the moment I'll leave it that way.

Now I've read the installation instructions but I'm still confused about the actual working of the winch.
Just seen that the Becker says it must only be engaged at idle and then never more that 1200 t/ms.
What is the idle speed on a jeep ? About 900 ?
Can you rev the engine to make it turn faster ? Or do you just leave it on idle.

If the winch can't pull the charge is there some kind of a slipping clutch so it doesn't rip the teeth off ?

And I imagine that you can just disengage with the engine running no problem.

Sorry if it sounds stupid but I can't see from the photos and drawing how it really works in detail.

One unexpected bonus - the extra weight has leveled out my jeep lean a bit !!

david,

you just rev the engine to make it turn faster, when the amp meter starts moving then the engine is turning around 1200 rpm.
If the load is to big the engine will just stop, so nothing is going to break! 8)
I can just disengage and engage with the engine running no problem.
But i think its better to stop the engine than engage it and than start it again to stop wear on the teeth.

those winches are pretty d#mn strong, I've winched a 4000 ltr (empty  ) oil tank uphill while diging itself in the ground  and the engine sounded like it was just at idle !!
but I had to block the wheel with big beams so the jeep didn't slide forward, because brakes alone do not work when slippery.

its just fun to play with but you will find out when you finish it
