Hey Bob...if you believe the hood number, the first pic is a Willys MB.

XX356352 would have been a part of a 1942 contract W-303-ORD-2529 for 85,237 jeeps with USA numbers from 20298626 - 20364862. The exact DOD on that jeep is not known to me.

I've been doing research on these for a while now...trust me there's nothing out there !!!!

I have one which I hope will be finished in about a year or so if I can get back on it.....here are a couple of pic's from a year ago now !!! Mine will be AAF flightline jeep from Hamilton Field 4th army airforce.

Here are the other stretched jeeps....

What is the wheelbase of your streched jeep?
I guess there was different WB on all these jeeps that was modified in the field.

Mine is the exact same as this one ......2'6"

Mine will look pretty much the same as this one with a few little things that will be different !

I have been playing with the idea to make one of my "left overs" jeeps as a long wheelbase jeep too, and perhaps it would be an idea to make it the same WB as yours. But I was thinking of one like the one with the lower sides. As perhaps used on one of the airfields..
Put "the problem" with these photos is that it seems that the jeeps looks very good bodyvise. I would have tought that if some of them had been streched, they had to use some jeeps from the scrap heap. So they would have been more bulky and not looking this good. Coments on this?

Rolf, are you suggesting that this was a FACTORY mod? SOME of the pictures look really smooth, but they aren't without their obvious points. Wonder what the floor pans look like.

The first pic also has a Willys bumper on it, backing up the hood number that someone else mentioned.

Yes I have no doubt that all the stretched jeeps were GI field mods ! If you look closely you can see where the pictured jeeps were cut and spliced together....

Since I had my first stretched jeep I have heard a handful of stories why they were done.....some stories good, others a little far fetched but amybe true ? :wink:

The first one I had was a Willys that was 3' 2" stretched... a little too long for my taste. 5 months later found this one actually at Tower Park going on three years ago now....the cleanest one out of the two plus this one is a GPW with matching engine and frame #'s so this one wins !!!

The AAF were the best I think - the Coast Guard jeeps were a little crude looking but I'm sure did the trick for what they wanted out of it. 2'6" is the perfect length I think plus you have period pic's to back it up....you can get 4 single seats and a bench in it or 2 singles and two bench....it will be fun - I have a lot of little things to do and beings that it's a field mod and that really no one has seen one up close and personal....anything goes ! Mix and match parts and no one will be able to say anything and be able to back it up :shock:

off limits to the jeep police I guess you could say !

I don't think it was any factory mods. At least not for those in european theatres.
What I meant was that I tought that if some GI's wanted their hands on a jeep intedning to strech it, they had to go "steal" a jeep in a repair shop. And if they was so lucky to have one, they had to do with one that the mekanics did not want to repair due to too much dents and so on the body/frame.
Can't think they would "get away with it" if their sergeant saw them cutting a jeep in half. The job had to take some houres so I guess he would have been pretty red in his face if he saw a jeep that was fully operationable laying in bits and pices...
But then again, who knows...
