Odograph survey

Post by Paul FitzGerald » Tue Oct 09, 2007 11:16 pm

I am trying to build a database of the Odograph units left in the world. Out of over 1500 units built by Monroe and IBM I have been able to get data on thirteen units so far.
Please include the Ser# of the Compass/plotter/Power supply. As well as the type of Veh Ford/Willys and your Veh ser#. Does it still work and do you have spare parts to part with.
PM me as your info will be confidentail. . . .
Cheers
Paulie

Paul, I wonder if 8 is all that remains? Are you sure that they all went out to surplus? And even if they did, bubba may have thrown it away as he didn't know what it was or how to use it.

Bob
Here is a link to help you out. The thing is UGLY(but cute).

Maybe you can make it to Portland and see it in person.

Luke.
I just found out there is one in a museum at the Smithsonian Institute. So the number increases by one. Making a total of NINE that I know of. There maybe more but I really don't know that is why the survay. The Owner of Monroe Calculating Machine Co.(maker of the unit) wants to do an article with NBC on the unit next month. Makes for good PR as their units still work after 60+ years. Get your Garmin or Tomtom to do that.

Willys Motors asks in this posting http://www.g503.com/forums/viewtopic.ph ... 4&start=15 whether or not the odograph from Kim Pakards garage in Mass. is the one on your jeep. I don't think it was however you may want to respond to them. Check for their comment.

Maybe this is number 1 :? ?

Well, at least these items are a little smaller! Not much room left for the wife and kids after an odograph is strapped in...

Point well taken, BUT remember in WWII things were on a need to do basis. Throw out the rear seat, bolt in the compass frame and wire up and check out. Better than your wrist compass. After Calibration you were allowed +/-1 degree error. Which could be accounted for. I really don't think the wife and kids were allowed in combat. But you are right not much room left after installing this critter.
Still if your Garmin or Tomtom will last that long then maybe I will buy one.

So a Odograph is basicly todays GPS & Pedimeter systems that replace Odographs some decades ago to put it in a nut shell and one thinks todays technolege is new. It is actualy old technolege but more improved and srunk to the smallest usable instrument.

Joe
I guess you could say that the Odograpf is the FLINTSTONE GPS UNIT. Before the Portland event I tried to get the flint mobile drawn up with the odograph in the back and Fred checking things out. Sorry it didn't happen. Would have looked cool as a display item. I can now account for 14 units left. The hunt still continues for other units. The latest one showed up in LA and NIB/NOS, still awaiting the ser #'s.
The Garmin is much smaller and does not flatten out the rear springs.
