MB grill mod

Post by Jeep77cj5 » Sun Aug 30, 2015 4:03 pm

My grill was cut I would think to allow the motor to be removed, I am wondering if this was bubba or a military mod? If bubba did it I want to fix but if I can find evidence that it was done while in service will keep. Did notice that some of the bolts are the tie wire type like the military used on planes, any help is great!

An says it is a 45, looks like it was a fire jeep since it was painted red at one point, has had at least 5 paint jobs with the first being a real dark green, could not find any hood numbers when I stripped the hood either, everything seems to be orig all the body parts have the same paint,

If it was a fire Jeep, perhaps the grill was altered to make room for a pump. It would look better with a fresh grill.

There are some earlier than '45 features on here, is there a data tag on the frame? It would be on the inside of the frame on the driver's side at the front just before the bumper.

The body should also have a serial number, except for some of the Fords, it's located on the side or front of the triangle body gusset on the driver's side in the engine compartment. It's next to where the steering column goes through the body. Let us know w what you find.

The sn plate is gone but the title is a 42 but the sn on the title is in the 45 range as is the tub number, what parts look earlier than a 45? The back of the tub was cut out and then replaced with a piece from a script Willys tub, probably the 42 tub maybe

That grill is a hilarous bubba modification!
Just doing what they thought would make it the easiest to replace the motor. They probably thought it would be beneficial the next 10 times they wanted to pull out the motor!

Red is no indication of the jeep being used as a fire jeep, red was one of the most common colors that surplus jeeps were painted after the war, it made them look more like CJs instead of army surplus. Most of the GPWs I have owned have had at least one coat of read paint.
